If you have a baby on the way, you have quite a bit on your to-do list. You have appointments with your doctor, you are buying new furniture and clothes, and of course, you are picking out your baby’s new name!

While you are doing all of those things, don’t forget to take some time out to talk with our dentist, Dr. Scott Fellows. Here are some things to think about when it comes to pregnancy and your oral health.

If you are thinking about getting pregnant, you should visit your dentist. Your dentist can give you a routine cleaning and exam before your pregnancy starts, and can treat you for any problems. If you are pregnant, you should schedule a cleaning and exam during your second trimester. If you develop a dental problem during your pregnancy, you should contact your dentist right away to discuss treatment options. If you think you may be pregnant, let us know at your next visit. We may have to reschedule, and x-rays can be harmful to your baby.

You will go through hormonal changes while pregnant. Those changes can cause your gums to become swollen and irritated, which can leave you vulnerable to gum disease. You will also experience morning sickness, which will introduces acids to your mouth that will in turn attack the enamel of your teeth. You should rinse with warm water after a a bout of morning sickness and then brush your teeth. You may also experience dry mouth during your pregnancy, which can increase your risk of infection and cavities. It is important that you continue to brush and floss throughout your pregnancy.
